The second of seven festivals on the “Year of the Priest” as initiated by the Vatican will be held October 18, 2009 in the family center immediately after the 11:00 a.m. Mass.  A light meal will be served and the “Priesthood in the Old Testament” will last until 2:30 p.m.  Bring all members of the family for this special event and bring your bibles.

SHEPHERDING FUTURE SHEPHERDS … God’s Word, as given to us in the Scripture readings for this 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time, takes up the familiar theme of the Lord as the true Shepherd of his flock. The Gospel, in particular, focuses our attention on Christ’s solicitude for those whom he has chosen to carry on the ministry of shepherding following the completion of his own earthly ministry. In last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus sent the apostles out to preach the Good News of God’s love and to perform miracles of healing. Upon their return from this “first missionary journey,” Jesus “takes them off by themselves to a deserted place to rest awhile.” The crucial importance of their own future ministry is underscored by the fact that people seek them out even in their deserted place of rest. Today’s Gospel ends with the words, “When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.”

ANNIVERSARY REFLECTIONS:  Last Thursday, June 11 – the feast of the Apostle Barnabas – I celebrated my 39th anniversary of priestly ordination and began my 40th year of priestly service in the Diocese of Gallup.  I am the last non-retired incardinated priest of the diocese whose priestly life has been touched by all of the bishops of Gallup.  I was incardinated into the diocese and ordained a deacon under Bishop Espelage.  I was ordained a priest and assigned to my first pastorate (St. Johns, Arizona) by Bishop Hastrich.  I became the judicial vicar and the rector of the Cathedral under Bishop Pelotte.  God willing, I will live the remainder of my priestly life under Bishop Wall.
